Dorsal digital expansion
The dorsal digital expansion is a crucial structure found in the fingers and toes. It consists of tendons from the extensor digitorum muscle that split and fan out to form a broad aponeurosis over the dorsum of each finger or toe. This expansion merges with the extensor hood at the proximal phalanx, providing stability and allowing coordinated extension of the digits. It plays a vital role in fine motor control, enabling precise movements such as typing, writing, and grasping objects. Injuries to the dorsal digital expansion can impair finger extension and dexterity, impacting daily activities and manual tasks.
