Impacts of tourism
In this report I am going to discuss the impacts modern tourism may have, which
can be both positive and negative. Responsible tourism is all about decreasing
the negative socio-cultural, economic and environmental impacts in order to be a
responsible community.

Economic impacts
Positive
Increased employability

It is predicted that by 2025 Britain will have a tourism industry which is worth
over £257 billion which is just under 10% of the UK’s gross domestic product,
due to this the UK will be supporting around 3.8 million jobs either directly or
indirectly and this is around 11% of the total UK number. Moreover, this clearly
means that tourism has a positive impact as thanks to its existence money is
being brought into the host country which in this case is the UK and therefore
helps the government in paying British businesses in order to ensure that our
country is kept clean and presentable for not only its citizens but tourists as well
which means money will keep on increasing. (MEDC)

Increased domestic income and foreign currency earnings

The travel and tourism industry generates income for many people and
organisations such as private individuals and local councils. This can range from
a small amount which is earnt by a family running their own bed and breakfast to
a huge amount which can even be up to a few million pounds earnt by enormous
and popular travel companies such as TUI who now work all around the world.
The money that tourists spend on hotels, souvenirs, local cuisines etc contributes
to that countries GDP. For example, Barcelona in Spain welcomes around 8.9
million tourists a year however this is massively increasing as last year 32 million
tourists visited Barcelona. Due to the vast number of tourists many developing
countries like Spain itself are transforming tourism into a way of increasing their
foreign currency earnings and then using this earnt money to upgrade and
develop healthcare, education and social facilities for its locals. In order to keep
tourist numbers at a high the countries government also use the money
improving old attractions and also making new ones. (Coastal)

The multiplier effect

Tourism creates jobs and also supports growth in the primary and secondary
sectors of the travel and tourism industry which is known as the multiplier effect
and this is the amount of times that money spent by tourists circulates through a
country’s economy. When tourists stay at hotels and resorts this creates direct
jobs in the hotel such as receptionists and cleaners and also provides wages to
the workers who then spend that money on things that they need in the local
community, however this also creates jobs indirectly in other parts of the
