,QUESTION 1 (35 marks)
Neo, one of the children in your class, does not look
healthy. His stomach looks bloated, and his skin looks dry and scaly. Apart
from often falling sick and skipping school, Neo seems to be tired most of the
time and his teeth are decayed. On following up on Neo’s family background,
you discover that he comes from a poor family and that his parents are
unemployed.
1.1 In your own words, explain what the cause of Neo’s
condition might be and what factors could be contributing to the condition. (4)
1.2 Identify five types of food, giving examples of each, that Neo will need for
growing and for staying healthy. (10)
1.3 Discuss how Neo’s emotions and
intellect are likely to have been affected by his current state. (10)
1.4 Obesity
in children is becoming a health problem. Discuss three major causes of obesity
in children and suggest ways of dealing with them. (10)
1.5 Give one
function of minerals in the body. (1)

1.1 Neo's condition may be indicative of malnutrition, specifically undernutrition. Factors contributing to his
condition could include inadequate access to nutritious food due to his family's economic status and
unemployment. Additionally, poor hygiene practices and limited access to healthcare services may exacerbate h
health issues.

1.2 To address Neo's nutritional needs and promote his health, he would benefit from a balanced diet consisting
of various food types. Examples include:

Protein-rich foods: Eggs, lean meats, beans, lentils, and tofu.

Fruits and vegetables: Apples, oranges, carrots, spinach, and broccoli.

Whole grains: Brown rice, whole wheat bread, oats, quinoa, and barley.

Dairy or dairy alternatives: Milk, yogurt, cheese, almond milk, and fortified soy milk.

Healthy fats: Avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and fatty fish like salmon.
1.3 Neo's current health status is likely to impact his emotions and intellect significantly. He may experience
feelings of fatigue, irritability, and low self-esteem due to his physical discomfort and inability to fully participate i
school activities. His intellectual development may also be hindered by malnutrition, as essential nutrients are
crucial for cognitive function and overall brain health.
1.4 Obesity in children can stem from various factors, including:

Poor diet: Consumption of high-calorie, low-nutrient foods such as fast food, sugary snacks, and processed
foods.

Sedentary lifestyle: Lack of physical activity due to excessive screen time, limited outdoor play, and decrease
participation in sports or recreational activities.

Environmental influences: Access to unhealthy food options in schools, neighborhoods, and communities, as
well as marketing of unhealthy foods targeted towards children.

To address obesity in children, strategies could include promoting healthy eating habits and providing
education on nutrition, encouraging regular physical activity through structured exercise programs and
recreational activities, and implementing policies to regulate advertising of unhealthy foods and improve
access to nutritious options in schools and communities.
1.5 One function of minerals in the body is to support various physiological processes and maintain overall health
For example, calcium is essential for bone health and muscle function, iron is necessary for oxygen transport in
the blood, and potassium helps regulate fluid balance and blood pressure.
