Median nerve
The median nerve is a major nerve in the upper limb, originating from the brachial plexus. It provides motor and sensory innervation to muscles and skin of the forearm, wrist, and hand, including the thumb, index, middle, and half of the ring finger. Compression or injury to the median nerve can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome, characterized by pain, numbness, and weakness in the hand and fingers. Clinical tests like Tinel's sign and Phalen's test are used to diagnose median nerve dysfunction. Treatment may include splinting, physical therapy, medication, or in severe cases, surgery to relieve pressure on the nerve.
