Right atrium
The right atrium is one of the four chambers of the human heart, receiving deoxygenated blood from the body via the superior and inferior vena cavae. It contracts to push blood through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle during the cardiac cycle. The right atrium's walls are thinner compared to the ventricles since it primarily functions as a receiving chamber. Its electrical activity, coordinated by the sinoatrial node, initiates the heartbeat. Conditions affecting the right atrium include atrial fibrillation, where the atrium beats irregularly, and atrial septal defects, characterized by abnormal openings between the right and left atria.
