Typical intercostal space
The typical intercostal space refers to the space between adjacent ribs in the rib cage. These spaces are numbered sequentially from superior to inferior, with the first space being located between the first and second ribs, and so on. Each intercostal space contains an intercostal nerve, artery, and vein, which run along the inferior border of the rib above. The typical intercostal space also contains intercostal muscles, which aid in breathing by expanding and contracting the chest cavity during inhalation and exhalation. Understanding the anatomy of these spaces is crucial in diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the thoracic region.
