Thoracic duct
The thoracic duct is the largest lymphatic vessel in the body, responsible for draining lymph from the lower body, left side of the thorax, left arm, and head and neck. It begins in the abdomen, ascends through the diaphragm, and travels alongside the thoracic vertebrae, eventually emptying into the left subclavian vein. This duct plays a crucial role in returning lymph, a fluid containing immune cells and waste products, back into the bloodstream. Dysfunction of the thoracic duct can lead to lymphedema or chyle leakage, causing swelling and other complications. Proper functioning is essential for maintaining immune health and fluid balance.
