Peritoneum
The peritoneum is a thin, transparent membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and covers the organs within it. It consists of two layers: the parietal peritoneum, which lines the abdominal wall, and the visceral peritoneum, which covers the organs. The peritoneum produces a lubricating fluid that allows organs to move smoothly against each other. It also provides support and protection for the abdominal organs. In addition to its structural role, the peritoneum plays a crucial role in various physiological processes, such as immune response and nutrient absorption. Disorders affecting the peritoneum can lead to inflammation and abdominal pain.
