Robert Hutchins, president and then chancellor of UChicago from
1929-1951, before then he was the dean of Yale law school for 2
years. While president at UChicago he pulled the football team
,out of the. Big Ten, and actually worked to eliminate fraternities
and religious organizations because he saw them as distractions
from learning. Hutch was named after him.
History of the Chicago Chapter
- Before ADP - Chicago Graduate Chapter (made up of AD alumni
from other chapters who lived in Chicago)
- In 1894, 10 UChicago students got together in room 21 of
Snell Hall and established themselves as The Lion's Head
becoming a secret society.
- They were great athletes and scholars who were excellent
examples of Samuel Eel's ideal of the "entire man"
- In 1895, they petitioned for a UChicago chapter with the help of
the Chicago Graduate Chapter and were approved
- First house: Old Llally House, a small house on 57th and
Kenwood
- Used to present an annual play
- After WWII, Hutchins prohibited undergrad fraternities, so it
became a graduate fraternity
- Came back to undergrad in 1954
- Hosted 3 International Conventions (72nd, 101st, 126th)
