Spleen
The spleen is an organ located in the upper left abdomen, under the ribcage. It serves multiple vital functions, including filtering blood, removing old or damaged red blood cells, and producing antibodies to fight infections. Additionally, the spleen stores a reserve of blood, which can be released into circulation during times of need, such as trauma or sudden blood loss. Its role in the immune system involves identifying and destroying pathogens, making it a key player in overall immune defense. Injuries or diseases affecting the spleen can impair these functions, leading to anemia, susceptibility to infections, or even life-threatening bleeding.
