Summary Perineal body
The perineal body, a small but crucial structure located between the anus and the genitalia, provides structural support to the pelvic floor. Composed of connective tissue and muscle fibers, it anchors various muscles including the external anal sphincter, bulbospongiosus, and superficial and deep transverse perineal muscles. This central point of convergence helps maintain continence by controlling the opening and closing of the anal canal and urethra. Additionally, the perineal body plays a role in sexual function by supporting the pelvic organs and facilitating their movements during activities such as childbirth and defecation. Dysfunction of the perineal body can lead to pelvic floor disorders.
