Ischianal fossa
The ischioanal fossa is a fat-filled, wedge-shaped space located on either side of the anal canal, within the perineum. It lies between the ischium and the external anal sphincter, extending from the pelvic diaphragm superiorly to the skin of the perineum inferiorly. This fossa allows for the expansion of the anal canal during defecation and contains important neurovascular structures, including the inferior rectal vessels and nerves. The ischioanal fossa is susceptible to abscesses and infections, which can cause significant pain and complications. Proper functioning and health of this area are essential for comfortable bowel movements and anal sphincter control.
