A. Presenting 3 of your selected vocabulary items including how you would elicit them,
and concept checking the more abstracts items
1. Communities
I will first explain the meaning of the word as being a group of people living in the same
place or having a particular characteristic in common.
Then, I will explain the word in context, I will explain to the class that a community is
normally formed by people who share the same believes or live in the same areal. A
community is usually formed from a large group of people who help each other when in need.
Now I will explain the form and pronunciation. Communities is a noun and the pronunciation
is kəˈmyo͞onitēs.myo͞onitēs.onitēs.
I will then explain to them that there are some other things to keep in mind. Communities can
be used in different contexts, but when it comes to describing a group, it always refers to a
group of people sharing a believe or a living areal.
To check student understanding I will ask them some concept questions that they need to
answer with the YES/NO:
Is a village considered to be a community? YES
Is a country considered to be a community? NO
Lastly, I will ask the class to note down the new word in their vocabulary books so that they
do not forget the word.
Next, we will look at the word minorities.
2. Minority
I will first use the technique of eliciting and tell the students that a small group from a large
community is considered to be a minority, as the Mexicans are considered to be in some areal
from USA. Then I will ask if anyone knows another word that we can call this small group of
people. They might tell me the word settlement, and then I will explain to them the
differences between these two words, as settlement being a place where people live, and no
one lived before.
I will then explain to the class that the form of the word is a countable noun, noun that can
take a plural form, and the pronunciation is məˈmyo͞onitēs.nôrətē
Then I will ask the class a few questions with the answer YES/NO in order to make sure that
they did understood the meaning and the context of the word.
Is a group of Inuit people living in Norway a minority? TES
Is the same group of people a minority in Antarctica? NO
