1.1 Background
We, the project group AV2E15 from Aviation Studies Year 2, have been commissioned by The
Antonov design office and the departement Aviation Studies of Amsterdam University of
Applied Science. The assignment is to reduce the current six engines of the Antonov An-225
Mriya to four alternative engines, and improve the performance of the engines by modifying
these engines. The final result should be an increasement of the minimum range to 3200 Nm
while the aircraft is carrying a payload of 200 Tons.
The Antonov aircrafts are used for civil and for military purposes. The largest aircraft, ever,
made by the formerly Russian aerospace and defence manufacturer is the Antonov An-225
Mriya. Its main task was to transport the space shuttle Buran, which the Antonov An 224 was
not able to operate due to the weaknesses of its performance.
According to the Buran programme, the space shuttle Buran should be launched into space,
and when it came back and landed on another location, the Antonov An-225 would return it to
the site of launchement. An aircraft was needed because this modality was the most preferred
option, compared to other transport facilities. The state-owned manufacturer suggested the
Antonov An-225. The structure is based on Antonov 124, except two engines were added to
overcome the drag created by the Buran. (loadmaster, sd)
Nowadays, the An-225 is also used for transporting heavy civil cargo, and not just for military
purposes. There are unfortunately several side-effects concerning the current performance
because of its previous operational function. These side-effects are the fuel inefficiency and
the range it is able to reach. When it was operating for the Buran, those factors were not
necessary. However, now we are willing to solve these problems, so that the aircraft is able to
reach a range of 3200 Nm while carrying a payload of 200 Tons in an environment friendly
and profitable way.
