Overview: Leadership Self-Assessment
Do you view yourself as a leader?
You have, no doubt, served as a leader in some situations, but you may not yet envision
yourself as a leader in the nursing environment. This course is designed to help you
recognize the leadership and management qualities you bring to the profession, sharpen
and enhance those skills, and to encourage you to seek out leadership and management
opportunities.
Use the Professional Development Inventory to assess your leadership qualities and skills.
Save your results and/or make notes of the conclusions.

Conclusions and Reflections
Describe your overall leadership characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses. Comment on
any characteristics that the tool did not address that you believe to be important.


The Professional development inventory assessed my strengths and weaknesses as far as
leadership and management. Some of my top strengths are being assertive, time management, finding
out learning needs, active listening, and giving recognition. As far as being assertive when working
with my patient care techs or PCA’s I try to be across the board. They know when I really need them to
do their job and I express this to them daily. When I am feeling overwhelmed on a particular day I
express that to them and tell them they need to step up to the plate and help as much as possible. I do
this in a manner where each one of them knows I need them to do their job and possibly do other things
they would not usually do. I believe one of my top strengths is my time management. Other nurses are
always asking me how I do things so fast. I tell them a few of my time management saving task and
they quickly implement them into their practice. For example, for my two hour rounds I start doing the
rounds thirty minutes ahead of time. This has saved me so many times. I also try to document as I go.
If I have two minutes to document I do not waste that time, I use every minute I have in order to get out
of work on time. The third strength I believe I have is finding out fellow employees learning needs. I
