Cancer registry - Answer- A system designed to collect information about the
occurrence of cancer, the types of cancers that occur and their locations within the
body, the extent of cancer at the time of diagnosis, and the kinds of treatments that
patients receive
Hospital- based registries - Answer- - Maintain data on all patients diagnosed/
treated for cancer at that particular facility
-Goal is to improve patient care by evaluation of treatment outcomes
- Incidence based
Population- based registries - Answer- Collect data on all cancer cases in a defined
population
Main sources of information:
- Treatment facilities, hospitals, cancer centers, clinics, hospices
- Diagnostic services; pathology labs
- Death certificates
Designed to determine cancer patterns among various populations to monitor trends
The United States has two agencies that provide national cancer data: - Answer-
Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)
National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR)
SEER - Answer- - Established followed the National Cancer Act in 1971
- Collects and publishes cancer incidence and survival data
- Data received is in aggregate form
NPCR - Answer- - Established by CDC following the Cancer Registries Amendment
Act in Oct 1992
-Designed to provide cancer incidence data to meet CDC requirements
- Establishes criteria for completeness, timeliness, and data quality
