Statement of the Problem
Introduction
Due to the advancement of technology, there's been rapid development and enhancement
of educational tools especially learning management systems that enhance language learning.
Such systems provide various features that are meant to complement the learning process, such
as interactive lessons, feedback, and learning paths (Nteliou et al., 2021). However, despite these
innovations, the usage of such technologies by certain groups, especially migrant individuals,
remains a difficult proposition. Some of the reasons include a lack of technological devices,
inadequate language proficiency, and differences in technology literacy (Asamoah, 2021). This
study is interested in the diffusion of the LMS application known as Duolingo among Haitian
migrants in the United States. Analyzing the Duolingo adoption and usage data in the context of
this study will reveal factors that will help determine if this particular technology can effectively
teach the Haitian migrants language, thus inform more socially responsive approaches to
education.
The Research Problem
Therefore, the main research question governing this study is the underutilization of
LMS applications in general and Duolingo in particular among Haitian migrants in the United
States. This problem can be attributed to a discrepancy between the accessibility of relevant
products and their uptake by the intended users (Al-khresheh, 2021). World popular for its
efficiency in the learning of languages, Duolingo provides an easy and quite easy way of
learning English. Nevertheless, there is a concern that the proportion of Haitian migrants that use
this technology is still very minimal. Some of the attributes that may be responsible for this low
rate of adoption may be the availability of technology, culture, and the level of computer literacy
