Transportation and communication infrastructure in the United States by 1860 was
remarkably instrumental in the region's economic growth and the terrain's integration. Roads and

century. In the beginning, roads can be best described as trails, and even as the demand for the
transport system increased, so did the enhancement of the roads. It was a practice to establish
turnpikes; these were toll roads that individual companies constructed. It was started in 1811, and
it is amongst the most important road projects of this era. It connected Maryland to Illinois
through National Road. These roads were crucial factors in enhancing the connection between
various areas and for trade and transport.
A major benefit of roads, which has already been pointed out above, was their openness
or easiness of access. Among the transport facilities that could be built almost anywhere, roads
are an example that deserves recognition. They offered straight lines for rapid and short-distance
accessibility for clients and the transportation of products and raw materials, which was very
useful for local markets. Furthermore, the construction of roads was badly needed, and their
maintenance gave work and boosted the economy in the relevant regions. While road transport
had its advantages, there were also setbacks associated with it. These are expressed as
inaccuracies, oftentimes worn out and exposed to different weather conditions, hence incurable,
especially under unfavorable circumstances. The expenses that can be incurred when
constructing roads as well as maintaining the already constructed roads could be very expensive;

the deep South and the East. Such an increase in the use of rivers as a means of transportation
greatly helped the growth of other regions alongside the waterways.
