THE STORY ABOUT POVERTY Societal Beliefs It is a common misconception that
poverty is caused by personal shortcomings, such as laziness or a difficult upbringing with
neglectful parents. Such beliefs can lead to the notion that those living in poverty are a drain
on society that needs to be fixed. However, the reality is that individuals in poverty are no
different from those who are financially secure - they work just as hard to provide for their
families and meet their expenses. The primary difference lies in access to resources,
privileges, and social networks. Research indicates that those with lower socio- economic
status often have fewer social connections and less support (Weyers et al. 2008). It is crucial
to dispel the myth that those living in poverty are a burden on society, as this is patently
untrue. In addition, it is vital to acknowledge the social and economic disparities that
contribute to poverty and strive towards creating a more equitable society where everyone
has equal opportunities. The author describes hardworking individuals living in poverty who
make valuable contributions to society despite their challenging circumstances. The author
emphasizes that these individuals do not suffer from substance abuse, poor decision-making,
or laziness. Instead, they adhere to societal norms, serve their community, and even create job
opportunities to generate additional income. Furthermore, the author sheds light on the
