SOCW 6500: Field Experience I
What types of critical self-review do you use to ensure that you are bringing the best of your
professional self to your roles? When looking at critical self-review and ensuring that I am
bringing my best self is to be self-aware of myself. "Use of self is the integration of theory
and practice embodied in the social worker and enacted in the worker-client relationship"
(Liechty, 2018). Being able to be aware of my own strengths and weaknesses and bringing
my best person every day is important. A balance of growth, openness, and professionalism
throughout the profession is created by engaging in good communication methods with
professionals, coworkers, clients, and parents. Include an explanation of the use of self during
your field education experience that you may have encountered or that you might encounter.
During my time at my field experience, I had been speaking with my supervisor regarding the
partial bias that I may face in the social work profession. The main bias that I have is with the
LGBTQ+ community. I have not had the opportunity to work with this population. But, for
the client to receive the finest services possible in this circumstance, it would be appropriate
to work with a new social worker. Once you're aware of your biases, keep in mind that you're
more likely to give in to them. I have been speaking with my supervisor of ways to put the
needs of my clients above my bias. As social workers, we must keep in mind that changing
unconscious biases requires patience. Provide a description of potential boundary challenges
in your field education experience. One boundary that I have while interning at Panola
