The respiratory system facilitates gas exchange between the body and the environment. It includes organs such as the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. The primary function is to supply oxygen to the blood while removing carbon dioxide. Air enters through the nose or mouth, travels down the throat, and into the trachea, which branches into the bronchi and further into smaller bronchioles. At the ends of these bronchioles are tiny air sacs called alveoli, where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange occurs across their thin membranes. This process is essential for cellular respiration and overall bodily function.
