What are important guidelines in infectious diseases in peds regarding fever? - ANSWER•Fever in the neonate (30 days age) is a medical emergency and warrants an ED visit for sepsis work up (LP, catheterization, etc). •Fever between 30 to 60 days can be seen outpatient, with significant caution/experience. •Over 60 days, can be seen in the family practice routinely, but develop a triage system to assure you do not walk into an extremely ill child. •We define fever as 100.4 F How do you treat a fever at home? - ANSWER•Children commonly have fevers for various reasons, including viral and bacterial causes. •Parents will commonly call/come in for guidance. •Ibuprofen is indicated 6 months of age. •Tylenol can be given younger (0-3 months) but child should be evaluated. •Alternating Tylenol and Ibuprofen provides continuous pain/anti-pyretic effect. *Always bring child in if something changes. What is important to know about acute otitis media in pediatrics? - ANSWER•Acute inflammation of the tympanic membrane and middle ear due to virus or bacteria. Eustachian tube inflammation results in lack of draining, fluid retention and bacterial colonization.
