Pituitary gland and
tumors of pituitary
, The pituitary gland or hypophysis is endocrine gland that
controls the growth, metabolic, reproductive function and water
conservation in the body. The pituitary gland weighs about 500
milligram.
Lobes:The pituitary gland consists of two lobes
adenohypophysis and neurohypophysis which are
anatomically,structurally and developmentally different from
each other.
The adenohypophysis is larger than the neurohypophysis and
accounts for 75% of the total weight of the gland.
, Location:
The pituitary is placed inside the hypophyseal fossa of the
Sphenoid bone.
It is suspended from the floor of the third ventricle by the
infundibulum.
Developmental source
The adenohypophysis develops from Rathke’s pouch (surface
ectoderm of stomodeum).
The neurohypophysis develops from neuroectoderm of
diencephalon.
