Question 1 (B)- Novel/ short story
The Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

1.1 According to the text given “Teaching literary works”, a
teacher should make provision for the interaction between text and
reader, not just at a cognitive level but also at affective level.
* Following the guidance of Combrinks’ model I will firstly prepare the
text as the learners have not yet seen the text.
This phase is the affective (emotional) phase mentioned above, which
entails an attempt to prepare learners to become emotionally involved
in the text.
* The best way for a teacher to explain a novel is if the learner has
read the novel and understand the story line vaguely.
* After the novel has been read, the teacher can discuss the novel in
more detail.
* The teacher should give clear explanations and examples of the
following: Characterisation, narrators` point of view, tension etc.
* As said in Combrinks` model phase 5 : “ Group-work is of utmost
importance in this phase” Learners will have to be able to discuss the
content and give meaning.
* The novel will be analysed by dividing the novel into pieces. Each
piece will be explained and elaborated and detail will be given on
characterisation, narrators` point of view, theme, milieu etc.
* the teacher will give activities to the learners to help them
understand and grasp each part of the novel.
