SEDIMENT CELLS:

- The process of erosion, transportation and deposition within the coastal margin is largely
contained within sediment cells

- A sediment cell is generally thought to be a closed system, which suggests that no
sediment is transferred from one cell to another

- Inputs to the sediment cell:
• Rivers

• Cliff collapse

• The sea
- Movement of sediment through the cell:
• Longshore drift

• Wave action
- Loss of sediment from the cell (to deter water:
• Tidal currents
