CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT
Consumer Protection Act enacted in the year 1986 to provide for better protection of the
interests of consumers. The act was passed in Assembly in October 1986 and came into force
on December 24, 1986. It was repealed by the Consumer Protection Act 2019. Patients have the
right to complain in a redressal forum if defective services are provided to them.
Objectives of Consumer Protection Act
To protect the right of consumer such as:
Right to consumer safety to be protected against marketing of goods and services.
Right to be informed about quality and quantity of goods and services.
Right to be heard and assured that consumers interest will receive due consideration.
The right to seek redressal against unfair trade practices or exploitation of consumers.
Right to consumer education.
T o provide prompt and simple redressal to consumer arguments.
To establish consumer protection council at state and central level to protect the right of
consumer.
Consumer Redressal Agencies
Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) should be established by the central
government.The CCPA is a regulatory authority and shall be authorized to enforce
penalties, recall goods, withdrawal of services, and provide refunds.
Consumer Dispute Redressal Comunission (CDRC), should be set up at the district, state,
and national level (Commissions).
Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (CDRC) is responsible for resolving
complaints related to unfair trade practices, defective goods and services, overcharging
and goods which are a hazardous to life and safety
