Bipolar and Related Disorders Overview Bipolar and related disorders are a category of mental disorders that result in manic/hypomanic episodes. Disorders Bipolar 1 is the traditionally thought of presentation of Bipolar Disorder, in which a person experiences a significant manic episode. Bipolar 2 is similar, but the person will suffer from a hypomanic episode, which is milder and persists for a shorter amount of time. Cyclothymic Disorder is a milder form of Bipolar that consists of periods with hypomanic symptoms that do not meet the criteria of Bipolar 2, and depressive symptoms that do not meet the criteria of a depressive disorder.
