1. Describe briefly Summer Hill School in one or two paragraphs. In your own point of view,
what are it positive or negative features? Please expound your justifications If given a chance to
be a curriculum planner or educational leader will you advocate educational principles similar
to summer hill? Why? (25point)
Answer:
The idea of summer hill is to bestow love and approval on children by applying the
principles of freedom and no repression. A school with no set lesson times and a schedule filled
with freedom like an exciting and surreal experience for any young learning this is what
describes Summer Hill School. Kids learn at different rates and need to be taught differently,
some kids learn better through images and on hand projects. Summer Hill School has a lot of
rules but these rules are not imposed from higher authorities instead rules are decided by the
entire school body with teachers and kids with equal voting rights. Summer Hill is describe as a
small, independent British boarding school situated in Suffolk and it was founded by Alexander
Sutherland Neill in 1921, who displayed strong beliefs of democracy.
This is the type of school which caters the learner’s right to choose what’s the best way
for them to learn and allows children to be free from adult authority and be able to grow both
personally and professionally at their own paced. Neil argued that kids should be free and happy
and anything imposed by the authority is wrong. We should allow kids to make their own
opinions and decide what should be done.
Despite of these beliefs that summer hill school would like to impose we could not deny
the fact that it has its impact to learners it could be positive or negative. Summer hill school
opens opportunities to learners to have great impact on what they want and what they would like
to learn. This allows them to develop at their own pace, enjoy what they do and achieve the
results they want to achieve. This can also foster the idea to learner that they can learn and
continue to work whether or not an adult is present. We as teachers we know that learners
knows best when it comes to their study choices, we always to consider what our learner way of
learning likewise in summer hill school they allow the learners to have the power to make
decisions about their learning and I guess this will help them to be responsible and self-
determined individuals. With these positive features of summer hill school or a democratic
education what could be the potential drawbacks of these to learners and community as well?
