, 1. Benefit-cost Ratio
To calculate the Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR) for a project, you need to divide the total
benefits of the project by the total costs. The formula is:
Total Benefit
BCR =
Total Costs
Project life: 12 years CRL, 10 years ARASCO
Total cost: $ 450 millions
a. CRL
Total benefit: $30 million x 12 years = $360 millions
Total Benefit $360 mil
BCR = = = 0.8
Total Costs $450 mil
The BCR is lower than 1 which is means the project’s cost is expected to outrun it
benefit and should be rejected.
b. ARASCO
Total benefit: $30 million x 10 years = $300 million
Total Benefit $300 mil
BCR = = = 0.6
Total Costs $450 mil
The BCR is lower than 1 which is means the project’s cost is expected to outrun it
benefit and should be rejected.
Feasibility: If the ratio is lower than 1 that means the project cost is more than benefit
and it should be rejected. If the ratio is equal to 1 or greater than 1, the project
considered viable.
