Chapter 12: Lymphatic System and Body Defenses ( Marieb )
lymphatic system- Composed of a network of vessels, ducts, nodes, and
organs. Provides defense against infection.
✅
Lymphatic Vessels- the function of the ____ is to form an elaborate
drainage system that picks up this excess interstitial fluid called lymph
Lymph-✅protein rich watery fluid or the excess interstitial fluid
lymphatic capillary-✅- weaves between the tissue cells and blood
capillaries in the loose connective tissues of the body and absorb the
leaked fluids.
-remarkably permeable
- form flaplike minivalves that act as one-way swinging doors.
✅
lymphatic collecting vessels- collect lymph fluid draining from lymphatic
capillaries, has 3 tunics, many valves
right lymphatic duct-✅receives lymph from the right upper part of the body
✅drains the rest of the body into the left subclavian vein
thoracic duct-
lymph nodes-✅Helps protect the body by removing foreign material such
as bacteria and tumor cells from the lymphatic stream and by producing
lymphocytes that function in the immune response
Bean-shaped filters that cluster along the lymphatic vessels of the body.
They function as a cleanser of lymph as wells as a site of T and B cell
activation
, ✅
macrophages- cells found within the lymph nodes, they are phagocytes
that destroy bacteria, cancer cells, and other foreign matter in the lymphatic
stream
Lymphocytes- ✅A type of white blood cell that make antibodies to fight off
infections
The two types of white blood cells that are part of the body's immune
system: B lymphocytes form in the bone marrow and release antibodies
that fight bacterial infections; T lymphocytes form in the thymus and other
lymphatic tissue and attack cancer cells, viruses, and foreign substances.
✅
Fibrous capsule- Lymph nodes vary in shape and size but most are
kidney-shaped about 1 cm long and buries in the connective tissue that
surrounds them. each node is surrounded by a ____________ from which
connective tissue strands trabeculae extend inward to divide the node into
a number of compartments
✅
cortex- the outer part of the lymph node that contains collections of
lymphocytes
- B cells dividing, T cells in transit, lots of dendritic cells
✅
lymphoid follicles- solid, spherical bodies consisting of tightly packed
lymphoid cells and reticular fibers
typically part of larger lymphoid organs
✅
Germinal centers- nodes and nodules have sites for rapidly dividing B
cells and plasma cells
dark-staining centers of follicles
