• A Lift or Elevator is an appliance designed to transport men or materials betwe
the floors in a vertical direction by means of a guided car or a platform powere
electric motors, hoist or pump hydraulic fluid.
• Skyline of a modern city would not have been possible without lifts.
• The need of vertical transport is as old as civilization.
• Mankind has used man, animals and water power for lifting purpose over the c
until the dawn of Industrial Revolution.
• In Ancient Greece, Archimedes developed a lifting device operated by
ropes and pulleys.
