Counseling Skills 1 -Chapter 1
Counseling - ANS-A time-limited relationship in which counsellors help clients increase
their ability to deal with the demands of life. Goal is to provide assistance so that people
seeking help can gain some control over their problems. Long term goal is to restore or
develop a client's ability to cope with the changing demands of their lives
(empowerment).
Skill Clusters - ANS-Relationship-building skills, exploring or probing skills, empowering
skills, challenging skills.
Relationship-building skills - ANS-Is a skill cluster. Basic tools for engaging clients,
developing trust and defining the purpose of counselling. 3 sub categories:
Promoting core conditions: positive regard (respect for clients).
Active listening: silence & empathy
Defining and sustaining the relationship: immediacy
Exploring/Probing Skills - ANS-Used to gather information, clarify, obtain details. Active
listening: paraphrasing, questioning.
Open-ended statements. Directives.
Empowering Skills - ANS-Help build client self-esteem and confidence. Teaching, giving
information, supporting, searching for strengths.
Challenging Skills - ANS-Used to encourage clients to evaluate their behaviour and
ideas. Push clients toward change and growth. Subclusters:
Confronting: providing critical feedback and correcting distortions.
Action Planning: defining clear and measurable goals
Use of power and authority: setting limits, and enforcement.
Active listening - ANS-A clusters of skills to build a better understanding of the client.
Includes: attending, paraphrasing, summarizing, questioning and empathy.
Attending - ANS-Manner in which counsellors communicate that they are physically and
psychologically interested in what their clients are saying or doing.
Paraphrasing - ANS-More about empathy. Restating the client's thoughts in your own
