Information Systems - Chapter 12 -
Business Intelligence and Analytics
What is business intelligence? - ANS-broad category of applications, technologies, and
processes for gathering, storing, accessing, and analyzing data to help business users
make better decisions
What are business analytics? - ANS-a subset of BI based on statistics, prediction, and
optimization
What is management? - ANS-a process by which an organization achieves its goals
through the use of resources
What is productivity? - ANS-measure of the ratio between the inputs and outputs
What is a decision? - ANS-a choice among two or more alternatives that individuals and
groups make
What are the three phases in decision making? - ANS-1) intelligence phase - what is the
problem?
2) design phase - what are my options?
3) choice phase - pick an option and decide how to implement it
What are the following trends that make decision making so difficult? - ANS-1) number
of alternatives constantly increasing
2) decisions must be made under time pressure
3) increased uncertainty in the decision environment
4) information can be situated in different locations - how to do this in an inexpensive
and quick way
What are the two major dimensions of decisions - ANS-Problem structure (3 classes)
and the nature of the decision (3 classes)
What are the three classes of problem structure in decision-making? -
ANS-decision-making falls along a continuum ranging from highly structured (routine,
repetitive, standard solutions exist) to highly unstructured ("fuzzy", complex problems,
