The Respiratory System
1
,Respiratory System
The respiratory system is an intricate arrangement of
spaces and passageways that conduct air into the
lungs.
These spaces include;
nasal cavities
pharynx,
voice box, or larynx;
windpipe, or trachea; and
lungs themselves, with their conducting tubes and air
sacs.
The entire system might be thought of as a pathway
for air between the atmosphere and the blood

• Gas exchange

Respiratory tract—Branching passageway,
carries air to/from gas exchange surfaces of
the lungs
2 divisions of respiratory tract
1. Conducting portion—Nasal cavity to larger
bronchioles
2. Respiratory portion—Smallest bronchioles to
alveoli
– Where gas exchange occurs
Other divisions are:
1. Upper respiratory tract
2. Lower respiratory tract
