Chapter 14 Community Review:
Theoretical Basis of Community/Public
Health Nursing
What is community orientation? - ANS-The process that is actively shaped by the
unique experiences, knowledge, concerns, values, beliefs, and culture of a given
community.
What is community-oriented, population-focused care? - ANS-A theory that employs
population based skills and is shaped by the characteristics and needs of a given
community. (Example; nurse counts homeless people in park to obtain data to form a
program that provides food, water, shelter, and clothing for these individuals)
What is relationship based care? - ANS-It incorporates the value of establishing and
maintaining a reciprocal, caring relationship with the community.
What does a reciprocal, caring relationship with the community involve? -
ANS-Listening, participatory dialogue, and critical reflection, and it may also involve
sociopolitical elements of practice such as advocacy, community empowerment, and
movement to action.
What is a population focus? - ANS-An implication by a nurse that utilizes population
based skills such as epidemiology, research in community assessment, and community
organizing as the basis for interventions.
What is relationship-based care? - ANS-An incorporation of the value of establishing
and maintaining a reciprocal, caring relationship with the community.
What is a theory? - ANS-A set of systematically interrelated concepts or hypotheses
that seek to explain or predict phenomena.
What is a conceptual model? - ANS-A set of relatively abstract and general concepts
that address the things that are of central interest to a discipline, the propositions that
broadly describe those concepts, and the propositions that state relatively abstract and
general associations between two or more of the concepts.
, What separates nursing theory from other professional theories? - ANS-The use of
metaparadigm concepts: Client/patient, health, nursing, and environment.
What is a metaparadigm? - ANS-A global statement that identifies the subject matter of
each discipline or field of study.
What is use to help fully understand elements inherent in nursing theory and the
underlying conceptual model? - ANS-A pictorial representation or a graphic model.
What were early theories referred to as? - ANS-Grand theories or conceptual models
What did Nightingale's theory of Environment state? - ANS-That poor environmental
conditions were bad for health and that good environmental conditions reduced the
prevalence of disease.
When considering services that need to be included to enhance a population's situation,
which questions should be asked? - ANS-1) Why are these services created?
2) Who benefits from these services?
3) Who pays for these services?
4) What is the cost to the people using these services?
5) What is the public's perception of the services?
What are some social determinants of health? - ANS-1) Availability of resources
2) Education, economic and job opportunities
3) Access to healthcare
4) Transportation services
5) Languages and culture
6) Crime exposure
7) Social support
8) Public safety
What are some physical determinants of health? - ANS-1) Natural environment
2) Built environment
3) Work sites, schools, recreation settings
4) Exposure to toxic materials
5) Physical barriers (handicapped folk)
6) Aesthetic elements.
