SHOULDER OPP Lab 1
What test is this?
1. Instruct patient to reach across their chest, over the shoulder, and touch opposite
scapula
2. Have patient reach behind their back and touch their opposite scapula
3. Finally, instruct patient to reach behind their head and touch the opposite scapula
APLEY SCRATCH TEST -- Active ROM Screening of Shoulder
What test would you perform to test active ROM screening of the shoulder?
APLEY SCRATCH Test
Palpation of Shoulder Structures:
What is located beneath the acromion process and can be reached by palpating
deeply from the anterior aspect of the acromion with the arm by the patients side
Subdeltoid Bursa
What special test is this?
1. Patient abducts their shoulder with their thumb pointing upward
2. Doctor will observe from anterior perspective and assess facial expression/verbal
feedback
Painful Arc Test
, A positive painful arc of motion is found between what degree of angle?
60-120 degrees = POSITIVE Painful Arc Test
A positive painful arc test indicates inflammation of what shoulder segment?
Supraspinatus Tendon and or its sheath
What test is this?
1. Observe scapula motion as the patient actively moves into whole range of
shoulder abduction from rest
2. The scapula does not even begin to move until approx. 30 degrees of shoulder
abduction
3. An increase in scapulothoracic motion could be indicative of frozen shoulder
syndrome/adhesive capsulitis
4. If the scapula is stabilized, then shoulder abduction will only occur to 120 degrees.
Assessment of Scapulohumeral Rhythm
What test would we perform for adhesive capsulitis/frozen shoulder?
Assessment of Scapulohumeral Rhythm
What special test is this?
1. Bring patients arm to 90 degrees of abduction. Turn the hand palm down
2. Instruct patient to resist your effort to push arm down towards waist
3. Pain/weakness = injury/irritation/weakness
Empty Can Test
What special test would you perform to check for a supraspinatus injury?
What test is this?

scapula
