BIOL 2200 Exam 1
Evolution - ANS-Descent with modification-- Charles Darwin
Change in heritable traits (genes) over time; change in allele frequency from generation
to generation
evolution is a scientific theory - ANS-a comprehensive explanation, supported with
substantial evidence (like the fossil record). we are very confident that this is a real thing
but not sure that it happens 100% of the time
Before Darwin - ANS-Aristotle (philosopher): the scale of nature arranges species in a
ladder order of lower to higher complexity
After Aristotle - ANS-Hutton (geologist)-- the earth is old and shaped by small, slow
changes like erosion
After Hutton - ANS-Malthus (economist)- human and all population growth is limited by
resources
After Malthus - ANS-Lamarck- proposed that organisms change because of their
environments. species drive towards increased complexity. acquired traits that improve
are inherited by offspring.
ex: giraffe
After Lamarck - ANS-Weismann- tested Lamarcks theory with lab mice. mice whose
tails were cut off did not pass on short tails to their offspring. disproved Lamarck's
theory.
Epigenetics - ANS-while there is no difference between genes in mother and offspring,
the function can be different due to methylation and these patterns of methylation can
be passed down
After Weismann - ANS-Cuvier- New species arise due to immigration
After Cuvier - ANS-Lyell- gradualism. processes that shape the Earth have been
uniform/ constant over time
