BIO 181 - scientific reasoning
scientific argument - correct answer-a chain of evidence that connects
evidence to a model supporting a claim
claim - correct answer-a conclusion, explanation, conjecture, model or answer
to a question
ex: this looks like a virus.
evidence - correct answer-Data, and/or findings from other studies that have
been collected, analyzed, and interpreted in a way that allows for an appraisal
of the claim.
reasoning - correct answer-A statement or series of statements that explain
the importance of the evidence by making the concepts or assumptions
underlying the analysis and interpretation explicit.
variable - correct answer-A characteristic or quantity that changes according
to the situation (can be discrete or continuous).
know how to calculate: - correct answer-mean, standard deviation, understand
slope
y=mx+b - correct answer-y= dependent variable
x= independent variable
b = intercept
m= slope
If there were more values around the mode, would you expect the standard
deviation to increase or decrease? - correct answer-decrease
If the range of values were to increase, would you expect the standard
deviation to increase or decrease? - correct answer-increase
deductive reasoning - correct answer-reasoning in which a conclusion is
reached by stating a general principle and then applying that principle to a
specific case (The sun rises every morning; therefore, the sun will rise on
Tuesday morning.)
