Evidence-based practice (EBP) when prioritizing mass casualties in an
emergency department
EBP indicates the nurse should first clear the ED of non-urgent clients and open as
many tx areas as possible. Casualties will be brought to the ED so the nurse must make
room to accommodate the high # of clients.
Smallpox
Contagious, disfiguring, deadly disease caused by variola virus.
Transmission: Exposure to infected client's bodily fluids (blood, vomit), contaminated
objects (bedding, clothing), and inhalation of droplets (cough of infected client).
Tx: provide prophylaxis thru immunization to mortuary workers, who have a high risk of
exposure to smallpox. This immunization carries some risks, should only be given if pt
directly exposed.
Note: Immunocompromised clients are at an increased risk of immunization-related
complications or death. Clients w/eczema are at an increased risk of immunization-
related skin complications which can be deadly or disfiguring. Vaccine should only be
administered if client directly exposed.
Respite care
Provide family caregivers with temporary relief from tasks associated with caregiving for
chronically ill family members, like Alzheimer's disease. Respite care allows the family
caregiver to leave the house, have some time away, or get an uninterrupted night of
sleep.
