How often do we use a navigational app to find the fastest route to our destination or do a Google search and
are prompted with various suggestions as to what we want to type next? We were all intrigued when Aaj Tak,
one of India's leading news channels, introduced an AI anchor named Sana with a human-like appearance that
is fed data that it can read using text-to-speech technology. Also, we have seen personal assistants like Siri,
Alexa, and Google Assistant become a staple of many people’s daily lives. In a sense, we are already embracing
artificial intelligence and anticipating it to be a transforming part of today’s society. Artificial intelligence is an
interesting endeavor to replicate and stimulate human intelligence through machines and mimic cognitive
functions such as learning, problem-solving, perception, and decision-making.
The history of artificial intelligence traces back to the mid-20th century, and early pioneers such as Alan
Turing, John McCarthy, and Marvin Minsky laid the groundwork for AI by exploring fundamental concepts of
machine and deep learning platforms and symbolic reasoning. Today, AI permeates various aspects of our
lives, revolutionizing industries, powering autonomous systems, and fueling innovations in healthcare,
finance, transportation, and beyond. Some sectors are at the start of their AI journey, while others are veteran
travelers.
In the opinion of George Couros, “Technology will not replace great teachers, but technology in the hands of
great teachers can be transformational." Adaptive learning platforms are using AI to digitize textbooks, detect
plagiarism, and gauge the emotions of students to help determine who’s struggling and thus build a
personalized and individualized teaching course for them.
Chatbots, including AI models like ChatGPT, are being leveraged to boost productivity, engage in real-time
conversations to get assistance in various tasks, and also facilitate communication between people by being
instantaneous translators. AI-driven voice assistants are integrated into customer care systems to handle
voice-based inquiries, provide information, and perform tasks such as scheduling appointments or placing
orders.
AI is bringing a paradigm shift to healthcare. IBM’s Watson Health offers solutions for clinical decision
support, medical imaging analysis, drug discovery, and population health management. AI-enabled surgical
robots can assist surgeons in performing minimally invasive procedures with greater precision and accuracy.
DeepMind’s AlphaFold is an AI system designed to predict the structure of proteins, which is crucial for
understanding diseases and developing new drugs. In the transportation sector, AI and machine learning are
producing major innovations. Companies like Waymo and Tesla are developing autonomous vehicle systems
that have the potential to reduce accidents, traffic congestion, and emissions while improving mobility. Ride-
sharing companies such as Uber use AI algorithms to predict demand, set dynamic pricing, and optimize
driver assignments to enhance the overall user experience. Even though autonomous vehicles are far from
perfect presently, they will one day ferry us from place to place.
AI has significantly revolutionized the way users enhance and manipulate images in novel and sophisticated
ways. For example, Adobe Photoshop features AI-powered tools such as Content-Aware Fill, which
intelligently removes unwanted objects from photos by analyzing surrounding pixels and seamlessly filling in
the gaps. Social media applications like Facebook and Instagram use AI to personalize users’ feeds by showing
content that aligns with their interests, preferences, and online behavior.
Augmented reality technology is used by digital platforms such as virtual fitting rooms to create a simulated
fitting experience that allows users to try clothes or accessories before purchasing.
Additionally, AI is also being deployed in the film industry. It was notably used in the production of the movie
“Her” to create a believable and realistic operating system character. The iconic sci-fi action film “The
Terminator” explores themes of technological warfare, time travel, and the ethics of AI.
