Content preview

What is the common origin of the renal and reproductive systems?
Intermediate mesoderm (i.e nephrogenic cord mesoderm)

Ducts for the genital system form from the what?
Primitive urinary tract - in males mesonephric duct --> wolffian duct --> vas deferens. In
females, paramesonephric duct --> female reproductive stuff.

What are the separate kidney systems that develop during embryonic life?
Pronephros
Mesonephros
Metanephros

The pronephros is adjacent to cervical somites. When does it develop and degenerate?
What function does this kidney system serve?
Located adjacent to somites
Develops and degenerative in 4th week, never functional

Connects to cloaca. As it degenerates, distal part becomes mesonephric duct

The mesonephros is adjacent to thoracic and lumbar somites. When does it begin
developing and what function does it serve?
When: starts at 4th week. Forms ducts, tubules and glomeruli that are briefly functional
beginning in the 8th week. First functional fetal kidney. Degenerates around 10th week as
metanephros becomes functional

Function: first functional kidney, although brief. All tubules degenerate around 12th week, but
its duct remain as Wolffian duct i.e male ductus deferens

Where is the Metanephros and when does it develop? What function does it serve?

, When: develops at 5th week as diverticulum of mesonephric duct. Functional around 9-10
wks

Function: becomes adult kidney. Produces urine to maintain amniotic fluid volume. Fetal
blood is actually cleansed by placenta, no metanephros

Cross sectional view of mesonephric duct

Where is the paramesonephric duct relative to the mesonephric kidney? Where is the
gonadal ridge?

Where does the metanephros develop from?
A bud on the mesonephric duct (i.e Metanephric diverticulum/"metanephric bud"), starts the
process. It meets a part of the intermediate mesoderm surrounding the bud which
differentiates into kidney tissue, called metanephrogenic blastema. Both expand and grow
and migrate rostrally in the abdomen.

What does the metanephric bud tissue develop into? What does the metanephrogenic
blastema develop into?
Metanephric bud --> ureter epithelium, renal pelvis and calyces, collecting ducts and tubules

Metanephrogenic blastema --> renal vasculature and glomeruli, Bowman's capsule, tubules
(proximal and distal convoluted, loops of Henle)

Which proteins are important for initiating branching in the metanephric kidney (metanephric
bud)?
Emx2, Pax2, Wnt1, FGF, BMP7

What event initiates induction in metanephrogenic blastema to cause development of tubule
material?
Growing of the tip of the collecting ducts from the metanephric bud tissue

Collecting ducts fuse with early tubules derived from Metanephrogenic blastema

As the collecting duct continues to grow, more new tubules continue to be differentiated

Once the growing tip of the collecting duct (from mesonephric bud tissue) initiates induction
in the metanephrogenic blastema to cause development of tubule material, blood vessels
associate with developing tubules and generate the glomerulus and bowman's capsule.
