• Hospice/end of life care – “comfort care”
o Life expectancy is 6 months or less

o 2 male client’s education
o Adult female with several vaginal yeast infections in the last 12 months
o If an older adult client comes in and is worried about HIV due to being with
many sexual partners, first ask them if they are having any symptoms (flu
like)
o Exposure prevention – wear gloves, take caution around needles
o When a doctor states “labs are normal” with an HIV patient who has been
receiving medication for 2 years – response is “your counts are normal
because your meds are working well”
o HIV and CD4 count – anything lower than 200 = AIDS
• AIDS – standard precautions with all actions
• IADLS
o Taking medicine, shopping, preparing meals, housework, managing
money, and using the telephone
o NOT ADLS (bathing, dressing, earing, and getting around the house)
• Widow grieving stages
o Stage 1 – reactionary (first few weeks)
o Stage 2 – withdrawal (first few months)
o Stage 3 - recuperation (second 6 months)
o Stage 4 - exploration (second year)
o Stage 5 – integration (fifth year)
• Stages of grief assistance
o Engage in active listening
o Functional assistance
o Assure stability will return
o Give client permission to express their emotions (let their feelings out)
• Geriatric syndrome examples (delirium, frailty, sarcopenia)
