Allied Health eopa Key Terms
Anatomy - ANS-The study of the structure and shape of the body and body parts as well
as their relationship to one another.
Physiology - ANS-the study of how the body and its parts work or function
Homeostasis - ANS-A tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal state; the
regulation of any aspect of body chemistry, such as blood glucose, around a particular
level
negative feedback - ANS-primary method by which homeostasis is controlled by the
body; an imbalance is corrected by a response that restores balance.
Stimulus - ANS-produces change in variable; the factor being regulated
sensor - ANS-receptor that detects a change; monitors the environment and responds
to change
control center - ANS-usually in the brain; determines the appropriate response and
course of action
Effector - ANS-sends the response that balances the original stimulus
positive feedback - ANS-when the body initiates a response that increases the
imbalance until a specific goal is reached
Cells - ANS-The basic unit of structure and function in all living things
Tissues - ANS-groups of cells that work together to perform a particular function
Organs - ANS-composed of two or more tissue types and perform a specific function for
the body
Element - ANS-pure substance that consists entirely of one type of atom
ionic bond - ANS-involve a transfer of electrons
