Standard 18 - A guardian manages all financial matters carefully.

and preferences.
Standard 9 - A guardian maximizes the self-reliance and independence of the
person.
Standard 17 - A guardian respects that the money and property being managed
belongs to the person.
Standard 11 - A guardian keeps confidential the affairs of the person.
Standard 8 - A guardian selects the option that places the least restrictions on
the person's freedom and rights.
Standard 2 - A guardian complies with all laws and court orders.
Standard 16 - A guardian avoids conflicts of interest and self-dealing.
Standard 9 - A guardian involves the person to the greatest extent possible in all
decision-making.
Standard 3 - A guardian treats the person with dignity.
Ward - A person for whom a guardian has been appointed. Utilized here to
include conservatee, disabled person and protected person.
Prudent Person - A person who acts cautiously in the handling of assets.
Physician's Report - A report required, in some states, in relationship to a
guardianship proceeding which substantiates the need for a substitute decision
maker. Also examining committee report.
, Oath of Office - A legal document signed by the guardian in which he/she
pledges to carry out his/her legal obligations to the ward in a proper manner.
Notice of Motion - A notice in writing, related to a specific case, stating that on a
certain day, a motion will be made to the court for the purpose or object stated.
Indigent - One who is needy and poor, or one who has not sufficient property to
furnish him a living, nor anyone to support him to whom he is entitled to look for
support.
Court Visitor or Monitor/Investigator - A person appointed by the court to provide
the court with information concerning a ward or guardian.
Administrator - A person appointed by the court to manage the assets and
liabilities of an intestate descendent.
Advocate - A person who assists, defends, or pleads, or prosecuted for another.
Advance Directive - A written instruction, such as a living will or durable power of
attorney for healthcare, which guides care when an individual is terminally Ill or
incapacitated and unable to communicate his/her desires.
Court Required Report - A report which the guardian is required by statute or
court order to submit to the court relative to the guardianship.
Court Order - A legal document issued by the court and signed by a judge.
Personal Representative - A person appointed by the court to manage the assets
and liabilities of an intestate decendent (one who dies without having written a
will).
POLST - Physician orders for life sustaining treatment. Records in detail the
decisions made by the patient and puts those decisions into medical orders to be
followed in a medical crisis.
