FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT SCREEN (FMS)
FMS - ANS-Non-diagnostic
Evaluates quality of movement patterns
Designed for HEALTHY populations (no pain or injury)
Evaluates symmetry of motor control
WHAT? - ANS-Involves 7 movement patterns + 4 MSK clearing tests
Why? - ANS-Identify compensation patters during athletic activities to highlight poor
biomechanics that can lead to increased risk of injury
Who? - ANS-Athletes who are pain and injury free
Modified version for low activity individuals
WHen - ANS-Pre-participation and during transition from rehab to return to sport
Regular check-ins (pre-, mid- and post-season)
FMS Process - ANS-Ensure athlete is HEALTHY
Assess using FMS testing protocol
Once asymmetries/imbalances are identified:
First protect
Then correct!
How to score the FMS - ANS-Always perform 3 repetitions
Score the best one
If an athlete scores a 0 anywhere, stop the test, have a medical professional assess
What are the 7 different types of FMS tests? - ANS-1.Deep Squat
2.Hurdle Step
3.In-Line Lunge
4.Shoulder Mobility
5.Active Straight Leg Raise
6.Trunk Stability Push-Up
7.Rotary Stability
Clearing tests - ANS-Dorsiflexion Clearing Test
Impingement Clearing Test
, Extension Clearing Test
Posterior Rock Clearing Test
Deep Squat instructions - ANS-1.Stand shoulder feet apart, hold dowel in 2 hands
resting on your head.
2.Adjust hands so that elbow are 90 degrees and press dowel over head, fully
extending the elbows.
3.Keeping the dowel over your feet and heels on the ground, descend as low as
possible into a squat and hold for 1 second before returning.
Deep squat grading - ANS-3. Feet stationary, knees over feet in the frontal plane, femur
below horizontal, trunk parallel to tibia, dowel over feet.
2. Above with heels on test kit board
1. Unable to achieve all of the above
Pain
Hurdle step instructions - ANS-Standing feet together, toes touching the board and
dowel resting on your shoulders, step over the hurdle keeping your foot lined up under
your ankle, knee and hip. Touch the other side with your heel, then return to the starting
position in the same way.
Grading for hurdle step - ANS-3.Foot stays neutral in frontal plane, clears hurdle
keeping dowel parallel to test kit and trunk upright
2. Unable to achieve above, but still clears hurdle and returns without losing balance
1. Unable to clear hurdle
0. Pain
In line lunge instructions - ANS-1.Hold the dowel lengthwise along your spine holding at
the small of your neck in the right hand, and small of your back in the left hand.
2.The stick should stay in contact with the back of your head, spine between the
shoulder blades and top of your glutes.
3.Step on the test kit with your right foot's toe at the ___ mark, and your left heel at the
0. The distance should be equal to the height of the tibial tuberosity
4.Touch your right knee to the board directly behind the left heel keeping the dowl
upright and in contact at all 3 points.
In line lunge grading - ANS-3. Dowel stays upright in frontal and sagittal planes,
maintains contact in all 3 points, knee touches center of board behind heel, front foot
remains in place.
2. Does not accomplish the above, but touches down on board
