Exam 1: FMS + SFMA
What is the FMS? - ANS-a ranking and grading system that documents movement
patterns that are essential to normal function
Purpose of the FMS - ANS-to identify individuals at risk, assist in program design,
provide a tool to monitor progress, and create a movement baseline
Primitive movement patterns - ANS-reciprocal reaching, supine alternate leg raising,
crawling, kneeling, and rolling
Higher-level movement patterns - ANS-squatting, stepping, and lunging
FMS mobility screens - ANS-active straight leg raise & shoulder mobility
Clearing tests on the FMS - ANS-impingement (shoulder mobility), prone press up
(trunk stability), and posterior rocking (rotary stability)
Screening - FMS - ANS-system for selecting; to protect somebody from doing
something dangerous; to check for RISK
Test - FMS - ANS-series of questions, problems, or practical tasks to gauge somebody's
knowledge, experience, or ability. measurement with NO interpretation; measures
ABILITY/function
Assess - FMS - ANS-to examine something in order to judge or evaluate it; to calculate
a value based on various factors. to judge INABILITY/dysfunction
Goals of FMS testing - ANS-- assess basic fundamentals of athletic movement
- identify, correct, and restore deficiencies
- optimizes performance potential of the training program
Mobility - ANS-unrestricted freedom of movement in a non-supported setting
Static stability - ANS-minimum to no movement, good alignment in presence of other
segmental movement and mass displacement
, Dynamic stability - ANS-unrestricted freedom of movement in a supportive situation
while maintaining alignment
FMS score of 3 - ANS-performed pattern as directed
FMS score of 2 - ANS-performed pattern with compensation/imperfection
FMS score of 1 - ANS-unable to perform pattern
FMS score of 0 - ANS-pain with pattern regardless of quality
Pain - ANS-familiar/regular, produced by common movement, signs of concern/distress
Discomfort - ANS-unfamiliar, produced with awkward moves, no sign of stress or
concern
Risk of continuing - ANS-aggravate cause of pain, fear/apprehension, pain alters
movement not providing a clear picture
Benefit of continuing - ANS-thorough representation, more than one pattern elicits pain,
different pain is discovered, baseline for future refereence
FMS guidelines - ANS-- when in doubt, score low
- do not judge
- do not coach
- do not comment on movement pattern
- was there pain?
What creates the movement problems? - ANS-- habits of daily activities
- poor training/rehab
- previous injuries
Causes of poor mobility - ANS-- muscle tightness
- stability problem/survival
- motor program issue
FMS scoring implications of a 14 (all 2's) - ANS-average movement and stability;
decreased risk for injury.
What is the level of risk for an asymmetry? - ANS-3x level of risk
