NRS 390 Exam 1
Best Research Evidence - ANS-The empirical knowledge generated from the synthesis
of quality study findings to address a practice problem.
Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) - ANS-Evolves from integration of best research
evidence with clinical expertise and patients' needs and values.
Description - ANS-Involves identifying and understanding the nature of nursing
phenomena and sometimes the relationships among them.
Explanation - ANS-Clarifies the relationships among phenomena and identifies possible
reasons why certain events occur.
Prediction - ANS-Used to estimate the probability of a specific outcome in a given
situation.
Control - ANS-The ability to write a prescription to produce the desired results in health
care.
Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) - ANS-Initiative focused on developing
the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitude (KSA) statements for each of the
competencies for pre-licensure and graduate education.
Inductive Reasoning - ANS-Moves from the specific to the general. Particular instances
are observed and then combined into a larger whole or a general statement.
Deductive Reasoning - ANS-Moves from the general to the specific or from a general
premise to a particular situation or conclusion.
Premise - ANS-A statement of the proposed relationship between two or more
concepts.
Quantitative Research - ANS-A formal, objective, rigorous, systematic process for
generating numerical information about the world. Conducted to describe new
situations, events, or concepts; examine relationships among variables; and determine
the effectiveness of treatments or interventions on selected health outcomes in the
world.
, Qualitative Research - ANS-A systematic, subjective approach used to describe
experiences and situations from the perspective of the person in the situation.
Outcomes Research - ANS-Focuses on examining the results of care and determining
the changes in health status for the patient.
Research evidence in nursing and health care is synthesized by using 4 processes -
ANS-1. Systematic review
2. Meta-analysis
3. Meta-synthesis
4. Mixed-methods systematic review
Systematic Review - ANS-A structured, comprehensive synthesis of the research
literature to determine the best research evidence available to address a healthcare
question.
Meta-Analysis - ANS-Conducted to combine or pool the results from previous
quantitative studies into a single statistical analysis that provides one of the highest
levels of evidence about an intervention's effectiveness.
Meta-Synthesis - ANS-The systematic compilation and integration of qualitative study
results to expand understanding and develop a unique interpretation of study findings in
a selected area.
Mixed-Methods Systematic Review - ANS-The synthesis of quantitative, qualitative, and
mixed-methods studies. Might include a variety of study designs, such as qualitative
research and quasi-experimental, correlation, and/or descriptive studies.
Evidence-Based Guidelines - ANS-Rigorous, explicit clinical guidelines that have been
developed based on the best research evidence available in that area.
Gold Standard - ANS-Guidelines developed and revised based on new research
evidence. Standard of excellence for patient care.
Critical Appraisal of Research - ANS-Involves careful examination of all aspects of a
study to judge its strengths, limitations, meaning, and significance.
Four common types of quantitative research - ANS-1. Descriptive research
2. Correlational research
