Disinfectant ANS - Chemical that destroys or inhibits the growth of miccroorganisms

Infection ANS - Occurs when pathogenic bacteria or viruses have entered the body through any opening
or broken skin

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) ANS - Provides employers and employees with the proper
information and procedures in handling, working with, and storing chemicals in the work place

wall.

,Two Types of Bacteria ANS - Non Pathogenic and Pathogenic

Non- Pathogenic ANS - not harmful, but actually helpful in process of digestion and stimulating the
immune system. Commonly found in the mouth and intestines and compromise about 70% of all
bacteria. Example: Saprophytes- organisms living on dead or decaying organic mater, which help natural
decomposition

Pathogenic ANS - Harmful and can cause disease. Feed on living matter and are responsible for causing
infection. Also referred to as germs or microbes. Example: mycobaterium fortuitum furunculosis, a
persistent skin infection causing boils bellow knees and triggers concern within podiatry practices

Three Forms of Pathogenic Bacteria ANS - Cocci, Bacilli, and Spirilla

Cocci ANS - Circular- shapred bacteria that produce pus and appear alone or in groups. Three groups;

1) Staphylococci- Grow in clusters, are pus-forming and produce boils, pustules, and abscesses

2) Diplocci- grow in pairs, are spherical shaped and cause pneumonia

3) Steptococci- grow in curved lines shaped into chains, are pus forming and produce strep throat and
blood poisoning infections

Bacilli ANS - long, rod-shaped bacteria that cause tetanus (lockjaw), tuberculosis (a highly contagious
lung disease) and influenza. Have ability to move- Cilia

Spirilla ANS - Spiral shaped, twisted bacteria such as treponema pallida, which causes syphillis and
borrelia burgdoferi carried by a tick causing lime disease. Have ability to move- flagella

Asymptomatic ANS - A person that carries the bacteria or virus that causes the disease, but has no
symptoms of the actual disease

Parasites ANS - Pathogenic bacteria which live on a host and will survive on that host

Two types of parasites ANS - Animal Parasites and Plant Parasites

, Animal Parasites ANS - Produce diseases such as Scabies (itch mite) and pediculosis (head louse(lice))

Plant Parasites ANS - Produce mold, mildew, yeast and fungus infections such as ringworm, which
comes from the parasitic fungus called dermatophyte

Other types of viruses ( seen and mentioned on test ) ANS - Herpes Simplex (HSV), Human Hepatits A, B,
C, Human Immunodifeciency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Dificiency Syndrome (Aids)

Herpes Simplex ANS - Characterized by fluid filled bumps atop and raised, red area. The most common
form is a cold sore or fever blister that may appear on the lips or mouth. HSV spreads easily by contact

Human Hepatitis A B C ANS - Viruses or blood borne pathogens attack the liver. Can occur through
contact with blood or bodily fluids from an infected person. Vaccine is available to help prevent the
spread of the hepatitis A and B viruses. There is no vaccine for prevention of hepatits C

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) ANS - Bloodborne pathogen weakens the immune system by
destroying the white blood cells, therefore making it difficult to fight infection and other diseases. HIV is
contracted through the transfer of blood, bodily fluids, and sharing the same needle of an infected
person through drug use

Aquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) ANS - Final stage of the HIV virus, destroys the immune
system

Signs of Infection ANS - Heat: infected area feels hot to touch

Ache: the infected area throbs, aches and is painful

Redness: the infected area looks red and sore

Pus: a thick yellowish liquid found at the site of infection

Swelling: the infected area is inflamed, enlarged or swollen

Decontamination ANS - The removal of any infectious materials on tools or surfaces by following all
sanitation and disinfection guidlines
