ICA Final Exam
Line - ANS- a mark on a surface that describes a shape or outline, it can create texture
and can be thick and thin, types can include actual, implied, vertical, horizontal,
diagonal, and contour
Shape - ANS- a 2-dimensional enclosure with no form or thickness, flat and can be
grouped into two categories: geometric and organic
Space - ANS- a 3-dimensional object having volume and thickness, is the illusion of a
3-D effect that can be implied with the use of light and shading techniques, form can be
viewed from many angles
Color - ANS- refers to specific hues and has 3 properties: chroma, intensity, and value,
the color wheel is a way of showing the chromatic scale in a circle using all the colors
made with the primary triad
Value - ANS- the degree of light and dark in a composition, it is the contrast between
black and white and all the tones in between, can be used with color as well as black
and white, contrast is the extreme changes between values
Texture - ANS- about surface quality either tactile or visual, can be real or implied by
different uses of media, degree of roughness or smoothness in objects
Size/Scale - ANS- refers to variations in the proportions of objects, lines, or shapes,
there is variation of sizes in objects either real or imagined
Time and Motion - ANS- any image that moves, functions both spatially and temporally ,
both can be implied as well as literal
Form - ANS- the organization of a musical composition
AB - ANS- binary
ABA - ANS- ternary
Rhythm - ANS- the duration of sound
, Organization - ANS- usually according to perceptible beats
Meter - ANS- pattern of beats with some beats strong and some weak, the most
common meters group beats into either 3's or 2's
Emphasis - ANS- just as some beats are strong and some weak, so our expectations
can be defeated by surprise
Melody - ANS- an organized succession of pitches perceived as a cohesive unit
Range - ANS- distance between the lowest and highest notes
Harmony - ANS- simultaneous sounding of two or more pitches
Consonance - ANS- the feeling that the harmony is "at rest"
Dissonance - ANS- the feeling that the harmony needs to move toward rest
Homophony - ANS- (a subset of polyphony) multiple lines of melody in which one is
important
Resolution - ANS- movement from dissonance to consonance
Texture - ANS- the way in which the various melodic parts work together
Monopoly - ANS- A single line melody with nothing supporting it
Polyphony - ANS- Multiple lines of melody at the same time
Theater - ANS- from the Greek Theatron, meaning seeing place, it denotes elements of
the whole theatrical production
Drama - ANS- from the Greek Dran, meaning to do, it refers to plays and dramatic texts
Plot - ANS- the story line and structural development of a play's actions
