1.1 Positive Personal Characteristics of the Effective Counsellor-Teacher
Empathy:
Empathy is the capacity to understand and share the feelings of another. It involves
putting oneself in the shoes of the student and seeing the world f rom his angle.
This attribute makes the counselor able to generate a safe environment, that is
conducive, making the learner feel understood and appreciated. Empathy generates
understanding that motivates learners to open up and talk freely about their problems.
Patience:
The ability to endure delay, trouble, or suffering without losing one's temper or getting
agitated.
Impact: Dealing with children and adolescents may sometimes be tricky as they take
time to talk about their feelings or even understand what is happening in the counseling
sessions. Patience ensures calmness, and the counselor composure gives students
time to express their thoughts and feelings.
Effective Communication Skills:
Effective communication demands the capacity to listen actively, speak clearly, and
convey messages easily understood by students.
Effective communication is the one that helps understand the student's problems clearly
and gives a line of clear action that the student will follow. It also avoids
misunderstandings and makes the counseling session fruitful and helpful for the
students.
1.2 Factors to Consider When Choosing a Counseling Strategy
Age and Developmental Stage:
Children and adolescents belong to different stages of development that affect th eir
cognitive, emotional, social, and other abilities. The approach to counseling needs to be
appropriate for their age, series of information processing, and maturity.
Nature of the Problem:
The nature of their problem would dictate the mode of counseling to be adopted.
Behavioral problems would be different in treatment compared to emotional or
academic failures.
